Take control of your TV watching,
We decided to buy a TV recorder because, with a young baby, we were finding ourselves too tired to concentrate on the television much past the watershed. With the large capacity drive of the BD-D8900 I figured we would not have to be fussy about what we did and did’nt record.
I was very impressed when upon switching the BD-D8900 on and navigating to the Freeview TV guide to record ‘Family Guy’ it suggested that the selected episode was part of a series and asked if I wanted to record the whole series – I did! Then it further questioned whether I would like a recommendation based on the Family Guy selection: I selected yes, and it suggested I consider recording American Dad too!! Brilliant. Now I can relive my pre-baby TV additions at any time of the day!
I have since noticed that the system is intelligent, it knows when BBC 3 repeats one of the episodes (which it tends to do regularly) and so does not record them more than once.
I have yet to buy any Blu-ray disks so have not tested that functionality, but the DVD works fine.
Smart Hub is a bit tricky to set up at first, as you need to create a logon account and then login to the various apps individually. Using the number pad on the remote this is fiddly. However I have since downloaded the Android Samsung remote app onto my Galaxy SII phone and now can easily use that as a keypad and extra control over the wifi network.
Now we’re saving for a 3D tv to complement the recorder!

|Disappointing Performance,
I live in East Yorkshire and the analogue signal here was turned off in mid-August 2011. I bought this item in conjunction with a Samsung LE40D580 40″ TV and both items have Freeview HD tuners. The TV picks up 108 channels but this Blu-ray/PVR box only picks up 59 channels. I emailed Samsung 5 days ago and received the following response from their support team today:
“Thank you for contacting Samsung about the amount of channels you’re
picking up on your Blu-ray/PVR player. I’m sorry that you’re only
picking up 59 channels and I can understand your frustration as all your
other devices pick up 108 channels.
I’ve checked the specifications and the Blu-ray and it has a low gain
tuner and the TV will have a high gain tuner. This would be the reason
that the TV will be picking up more channels. You could try installing a
booster to improve the signal and this should enable you to gain more
channels. Kind regards, Adrian”
I have 4 other TVs and 2 PVRs (all Sony) which all pick up 108 channels, so BE AWARE that the tuner in this Samsung product is of poorer quality and you may not be able to record all the channels you want.
I think I’ll be sticking to Sony next time…

|Lack of inputs make this PVR a waste of HD space,
I returned this product as although it provided a very good 3D picture the dearth of inputs meant the only ways of recording to the hard disk were either directly from the blu ray payer or else through the coaxial line input which I don’t have anyway as my system links through cable.
